Joshua 1:8
In yesterday’s devotion we were encouraged to journal about the wonderful Truths from the Word. Now let’s take those same scriptures a step further by memorizing and meditating on them during this most sacred Easter Week. I often ask the Lord to remind me of the passages He wants me to remember and He does. He will bring a verse back to my memory at just the right moment which encourages my heart.
Meditating on the Word of God is the key to success as a Christian. God commanded Joshua to meditate on the Word of God in Joshua 1:8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success”. Therefore it must be of great importance to God and to our spiritual welfare.
A good definition of meditation is: deliberately focusing your thoughts on the Word of God for the purpose of becoming more intimately acquainted with Jesus Christ -His Character & Nature, and desiring to be one with Him, experiencing His love, His mercy & His grace. In the Psalms, David often spoke of meditating on the things of God in the night, on his bed. Psalms 63:5-6 “My whole being shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips 6 When I remember You upon my bed and meditate on You in the night watches.”
Benefits of Meditating on the Word of God
Meditating on God’s Word changes us; transforms us into the image of Christ. In other words, we look like Jesus when we get the rhema (life-giving) word into our heart, Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].”
Meditating on God’s Word keeps us from sin. Psalms 119:11 “Your Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against You.”
Meditating on God’s Word allows God to share His secrets (His revelations) with His children-to speak with His children in a close personal way. He shows us how to apply the Word of God to our lives. Luke 8:10 “He said to them, To you it has been given to [come progressively to] know (to recognize and understand more strongly and clearly) the mysteries and secrets of the kingdom of God,”
Meditating on God’s Word brings prosperity, wisdom, success in every area of your life. Joshua 1:8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success.”
Conclusion: Let’s make meditating on the Word of God a priority in our spiritual life. This intimate communication with our Lord and Savior should be a way of life for each believer. Psalm 63:4-6 So will I bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your Name.5 My whole being shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips 6 When I remember You upon my bed and meditate on You in the night watches. And Psalms 27:4 “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and [insistently] require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple.”
